Flat Stanley
by Bernice Petock

This proposal was written on behalf of the first grade teachers at Blue Mountain Elementary East.  The project involved the reading of Flat Stanley by Jeff Brown and a follow-up activity that integrated reading, language arts and social studies. In the book the main character is flattened by a bulletin board and is later offered the opportunity to travel, but must do so in an envelope.  The children in first grade made an oak tag Flat Stanley, wrote a letter to an individual who lives outside of the area or who planned to travel and then finally a thank you note.  The adult participants were asked to take Flat Stanley on an adventure, make a pictorial and a written diary of Flat’s adventure.  All children were then given the opportunity to learn of the visited areas through the sharing of the materials received. The destinations for Flat Stanley were posted on the classroom map and postcards received from recipients were displayed on the bulletin board.  Materials that were received will be displayed in common areas of the school for the student body and staff to enjoy.

This project offers instruction relating to standards 1.2, 1.5, 1.6, 1.7, 5.1 C, K, 5.2C, and 5.4C.
