World Game

“How would you run the world?”

The Board of Directors of the Blue Mountain Eagle Foundation, in cooperation with M&T Bank, announces that it will sponsor a visit from the “Global Simulation Workshop”, o.s. Earth, Inc.’s mobile site.

Originally conceived by the American inventor, educator and visionary Buckminster Fuller, the internationally known “World Game” Global Simulation Workshop is designed to be a tool to be used by people around the world to understand and develop solutions to the “enemies” of humanity:  hunger, illiteracy, lack of health care, environmental degradation, and “you or me” thinking.

The simulator translates core elements of the global economic system into cards, chips, binders, badges, and other familiar items, and then allows players to interact with each other in a multimedia experience that simulates the next 30 years of global-economic development.  Players represent various geo-political regions, multi-national conglomerates of corporations (with invented names) and global organizations dedicated to special issues (health, education, human right, the environment).  Teams trade both concrete and abstract resources in attempt to “win the game” by raising their “wealth scores”.  By the end of the game, the simple act of “winning” gives way to an enhanced understanding of global interdependence.  The game leaves students with a new understanding of the global economic system and how it affects them.

The game will be played by students who participate in the Blue Mountain High School Gifted/Social Studies program.  Students will be required to complete a survey/questionnaire at the conclusion of the simulation that will ask them to elaborate on what they have learned and what they will take from the experience.  They will also have to develop a project that they feel best expresses what they have learned from the simulation.  Projects will be presented to the entire student population of the high school.

The program is sponsored by a grant to the Eagle Foundation from M&T Bank. M&T Bank donated the money for the “World Game” through their participation in the Educational Improvement Tax Credit Program sponsored by the PA Dept. of Economic and Community Development.

The Blue Mountain Eagle Foundation is a not-for-profit, charitable organization established to promote excellence in education and enrichment of the academic experience for the benefit of the students, faculty, and administration of the Blue Mountain School District.  Since 1998, the Eagle Foundation has donated more that $250,000.00 to the Blue Mountain School District in support of over 100 educational programs.
